biopsychology- ways of analyzing the brain Flashcards
what are four ways of analysing the brain?
FMRI, EEG, ERG, POST-MORTEM
what does fmri do ?
the brain cell requires blood and oxygen to function so fmri looks at the blood flow in the brain and tracks oxygenated blood when you do an activity. areas that are more active require more oxygen therefore more oxygenated blood.
advantages of fmri?
good spatial res. of 1-2mm
non-invasive
disadvantages of fmri?
poor temporal res. delay of 1-4 seconds
expensive
uncomftorbale as in enclosed space for long periods of time
what does an EEG scan do ?
- measure electrical activity
- via electrodes
- that are foxed to a persons scalp using a skull cap
- the scan recording represents the brain wave patterns that are generated by millions of neurons in the brain
advantages of EEG?
high temporal res. generates readings every millisecond
non-invasive
disadvantages of EEG?
poor spatial res. only detect activity in superficial regions of the brain only shows brain waves
hard to pinpoint activity
what does an ERP scan do ?
Isolates brain responses.
filters extraneous brain activity to assess brain activity that is a result of certain stimuli or events
this leaves evented related potentials (types of brainwaves that are triggered by particular events)
what is a post mortem on the brain?
examinanton on the brain after death to discover abnormalities in the brain
strengths of post mortems ?
good spatial res. can cut brain into small pieces and examine
increase medical knowledge
limitations of post mortems ?
causation- observed deficits may be linked to decay rather than issue being studied
is it ethical?
invasive
