Q

what was the procedure of asch baseline?

A
  • niave were tested individually
  • put into a group with 6-8 confeds
  • they were shown a line (X)
  • then shown three mre lines
  • two were obviously not the line
  • confeds lied together to see if niave would conform
  • there was 18 trials and they lied on 12

Q

describe unaminity and its findings

A
  • wanted to see if a non-conforming confederate would influence conformity
  • it did
  • conformity decreased to 1/4 of the baseline study

7
Q

describe task difficulty and its findings

A
  • lines more similar
  • conform more
  • this links to informational social influence - plays more of a role when situations are hard

Q

what were findings of bassline?

A
  • conformed 36.8% of the time
  • 25% never
  • 75% at least once
  • after, they said they conformed due to social approval and fear of judgement

Q

Evaluate asch baseline

A
  1. lack of temporal validity - Perrin and spencer replicated 30 years later and only 1/396 engineer students conformed1.

2.Lacks ecological validity - lab - lines - not reflective of the real world - cannot be generalised - decreases validity

  1. sample bias - 123 men - women are said to be more likely to conform said Neto - cannot generalise - decreases validity
  2. demand characteristics - were in a study and may have gone along with what was being said because they thought they had to for the experiment - this means conformity may be lower than thought - decreases validity
