SI - MILGRAMS OBEDIENCE RESEARCH Flashcards
WHEN WAS IMLGRAMS EXP?
1963
SAMPLE?
40 MEN
VOLUNTEER SAMPLE IN ANEWSPAPER ADD
WHAT DID MILGRAM SAY THE EXP WAS ABOUT?
MEMORY
HOW MUCH WERE PP PAID?
$4.50
WHAT WAS LEARNERS NAME?
MR WALLACE
procedure?
- participants told theyd be given role of leanrer or teacher
- this was manipulated so that they were always given the role of teacher and the learner was always a confed
- learner was strapped in a chair in a neibouring room with electrodes and a shock machine that the teacher would press everytime the learner got a question wrong
- started at 15v-450v
what happed at 315v?
the learner pounded on the wall and after that there was no response from the learner
how many prods?
4
example of a prod?
’ the experiment requires you to continue’
findings quantitative
- no pp stopped below 300v
- 65% continued to the highest voltage level
findings qualitative
pp trembled and showed signs of extreme stress
digged finger nails into their hands
three even had a seizure
evaluate milgrams baseline
Low internal validity- Orne and Holland 1968, P’s didn’t believe it was real and Perry 2013 confirmed this when listening to the tapes as they expressed their doubts for the shocks but…
Sheridan and King 1972 did a similar experiment with real shocks on a puppy- 54% males full shock, 100% females full shock- Milgrams results genuine + 70% according to Milgram said they thought it was real
High external validity- Milgram’s experiment represented wider authority figures/situations/ relationships in real life. Supported by Hofling et al, who found 21/22 nurses obeyed to unjustified demands. The process in Milagrams study can be generalised to other situations and it tells us about obedience in real life. Also, it’s a lab study
Research Support- le jeu de la mort replicated Milgram’s study on a live TV show and the results are very similar. P’s were paid to shock people in front of an audience. 80% gave a max shock of 460v to an unconscious man. they demonstrated the same behaviour that Milgram’s study did e.g nervous laughing. His findings were not just a one-off chance
Ethical issues- criticised Milgram for the way that he deceived his P’s, e.g. shocks were real and there was random allocation- she objects because she saw deception as a betrayal of trust that could damage the reputation of psychologists and their research

what was orne and hollands research?

what was Sheridan and King research?

who replicated milgram?
sheidan and king
le jeu de la mort
milgrams variables
proximity
uniform
location
milgrams aim
to see rate of obedience to authority figures
three variations of proximity?
1- in the same room
2- teacher force hand on electroshock plate
3- experimenter left room and gave instructions via a telephone
findings of proximity?
1- in the same room - 65% dropped to 40$
2- teacher force hand on electroshock plate dropped to 30%
3- experimenter left room and gave instructions via a telephone dropped to 20.5%
location variable
run down building rather than uni because in this situation the experimenter had less authority
findings of location
47..5 obedience
uniform variable
in the ogrinal the xp wore a lab coat in this the experiment left at the start of the experiment and was replaced with a person in normal everyday clothes
findings of uniform variable
20% the lowest rate of obedience
evaluate milgrams variables
+ bickman
- lack of internal validity the situation was so manipulated there was more D.C
