Math - Tables, Charts and Graphs Flashcards
What is a Bar Graph and what is it used for?
a graph that uses bars to compare data in different groups; compare quantities across different categories or groups
What is a Cartesian Plane and what is it used for?
used to graph points on a two dimensional plan on the x and y axis
What is a Line Graph and what is it used for?
a graph of a line showing how one variable changes against another (usually changes over time); shows trends and changes over time
What is a Pie Chart and what is it used for?
shows pieces of a whole (remember percents); show proportions and percentages among categories, representing them as slices of a pie.
What is a Histogram and what is it used for?
data is grouped into ranges and then plotted as bars; show how often different values appear in a dataset = distribution
What is a Scatter Plot and what is it used for?
shows the relationship (or correlation) between two sets of data
Compare a Positive Covariance vs a Negative Covariance
Positive Covariance: both variables are going in the same direction; when one variable increases, the other also increases
Negative Covariance: the variables go in opposite directions; when one variable increases, the other decreases
How do you identify an Independent variable from a Dependent variable?
Independent variable: the variable that you are purposefully changing (x-axis)
Dependent variable: the variable that you are measuring (y-axis)
