Pseduogout/Chondrocalcinosis

Acute CPPD
A
- Presents as acute monoarthropathy: usually knee, wrist or hip
- usually spontaneous and self-limiting

Chronic CPPD
A
- Destructive changes like OA
- Can present as poly-arthritis (pseudo-rheumatoid)

Risk Factors
A
- Increasing Age
- OA
- DM
- Hypothyroidism
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Hereditary haemochromatosis
- Wilsons disease

Investigations
A
- Polarized light microscopy: positively birefringement rhomboid- shaped crystals
- X-ray may show chondrocalcinosis: soft-tissue Ca deposition (e.g. knee cartilage)

Rx
A
- Analgesia
- NSAIDS
- May try steroids: Po, IM or intra-articular
