30% of >75yr will have dry AMD
2
Q
Risk Factors
A
Smoking
Increase age
Genetic factors
3
Q
Presentation
A
Elderly pts.
Central visual loss
4
Q
Dry ARMD:
A
Geographic Atrophy
- Drusen: fluffy white spots around macula
- Degeneration of macula
Slow visual decline over 1-2yrs
5
Q
Wet ARMD: subretinal Neovascularisation
A
- Aberrant vessels grow into retina from choroid and - haemorrhage
- Rapid visual decline (sudden/days/wks) with distortion
- Fundoscopy shows macular haemorrhage - scarring
- Amsier grid detects distortion
6
Q
Investigation
A
OCT: optical coherence tomography - gives high resolution images of the retina
7
Q
Mx for wet AMRD
A
- photodynamic therapy
- Intravitreal VEGF inhibitors
- Antioxidant vitamins (C,E) + zinc may help eary ARMD
8
Q
Intravitreal VEGF inhibitors
A
Bevacizumab (Avastin)
Ranibizumab (Lucentis)
