Risk factors
A
Vascular disease TRauma SCD Immunosuppresion (e.g. DM) Children - rich blood supply to growth plate therefore usually affects metaphysis

Symptoms and signs
A
- Pain, tenderness, erythema, warmth and reduced ROM
- effusions in neighboring joints
- Signs of systemic infection

Investigations
A
Raised ESR/CRP and raised WCC
+ blood cultures in 60%

X-ray changes
A
take 10-14d
Haziness + reduced bone density
Sub-periosteal reaction
Seqeustrum and involcrum
MRI is sensitive and specific

Management
A
IV Abx Vanc + ceftotaxime until MCS known
Drain abscess and remove sequestra
Analgesia
