Farm animal clinical exam Flashcards
What are the different diagnostic models? (5)
Blunderbuss approach
algorithmic approach
Pattern matching
Hypotheticodeductive model
Probabilistic reasoning
What is the blunderbuss approach
Do every test possible - expensive and time consuming
What is the algorithmic approaxh
flow chart approach - simple, inflexible
What is the pattern matching approach
recognition of ‘pattern of sign’
What is the hypotheticodeductive approach?
generate hypotheses + test them
what is the probabilistic reasoning approach?
how we think + use of previous knowledge
What needs to be done before examining the animal?
Restrain safely
What can be examined from a distance? (6)
coat
BCS
lesions
demeanour
mobility
symmetry from back end
Where to start clinical exam?
and what to check?
Tail end - check temp, vaginal
discharge, faecal staining
Normal cut off temp of cow/calf
cow =39*
calf =39.5*
What to check for with the udder?
palpate for clots/check colour
milk sample + sterile milk sample
California milk test - checks for
E.coli
how often should rumen contractions be heard
3 contractions every 2 mins
What is the Eric Williams test?
distinguish primary from secondary contractions or diagnosis of wire
primary = no sound + feel contraction
secondary = feel contraction + hear eructation
Wire = grunt before primary contraction
How do you listen for displaced abomasum?
listen in diagonal line from elbow to pin bones and tap the ribs to make a pinging noise - will only ping if displaced
where do you listen for the heart in a cow?
under elbow
