What vaccines are given to horses in the UK?
Tetanus
Flu
What is the initial influenza vaccine? and how often are boosters?
3 initial vacc - 1st at day 1
-2nd 21-92d after
- 3rd after 5-6months
booster every 6 months in racing horses
Why give tetanus vaccine?
cheap compared to treatment
Tetanus has high mortality rate and poor prognosis for treatment
What can a booster vaccine 4-6weeks before foaling cause?
passive immunity
when is initial tetanus vaccine given and how often is booster?
given from 6 months of age, another vaccine 4-6weeks after
3rd booster 12-17 months of first
booster every 2 years
Does all horses need a passport?
Yes and donkeys and zebras etc in UK
Who can issue a passport?
Anyone but only vet can microchip
so only vet really as all horses need a microchip
When should a passport be issued by?
6months of age
If a horse is not signed out of the food chain (unlikely) what can it not be given?
phenylbutazone - causes aplastic anaemia in humans
If a horse is sold what must be handed over?
passport
also if a horse dies passport meant to be given back to issuer
where is microchip given and how is it noted down on the passport?
Given at nuchal ligament

foot colour marked
description in black ink and capital letters
