Approach to canine pododermatitis Flashcards
What is pododermatitis?
Inflammation affecting skin of the feet
What are infection differentials for pododermatitis?
*Superficial bacterial pyoderma
*Deep pyoderma + furunculosis
*Superficial fungal
*Deep fungal
*Parasitic
*Viral
What are allergic differentials for pododermatitis?
*Atopic dermatitis
*Cutaneous adverse food reactions
*Contact dermatitis
*Pelodera dermatitis
*Tick infestation
What are immune mediated differentials for pododermatitis?
*Pemphigus foliaceus
*Systemic lupus erythematosus
*Vasculitis
*Adverse cutaneous drug reaction
*Lymphocytic plasmacytic pododermatitis
What are endocrine differentials for pododermatitis?
*Hypothyroidism
*Hyperadrenocorticism
What are acquired / traumatic differentials for pododermatitis?
*Sterile interdigital pyogranulomatous pododermatitis
*Foreign body pododermatitis
What are genetic / inherited differentials for pododermatitis?
*Familial paw pad hyperkeratosis
*Lethal acrodermatitis of bull terriers
What are metabolic differentials for pododermatitis?
*Superficial necrolytic dermatitis
What are neoplastic differentials for pododermatitis?
*Nail bed squamous cell carcinoma
*Epitheliotrophic lymphoma
What is the pathogenesis of sterile pyogranulomatous pododermatitis?
1.Trauma from enviroment +/- self induced (e.g. atopic dermatitis)
2.Weight bearing in heavy dogs distributed to haired interdigital skin adjacent to paw pads
= follicular obstruction, damage + rupture
-lesions start sterile, self trauma = quickly results in secondary infection
-recurrent trauma = increased scar tissue
Where are the lesions of sterile pyogranulomatous pododermatitis found?
Lesions form on ventral interdigital surface, but rupture onto dorsal surfaces
What animals are predisposed to sterile pyogranulomatous pododermatitis?
*Most common in smooth, short coated breeds - english bulldogs, staffies, labradors
*overweight patients also predisposed
What is seen on cytology of a sterile pyogranulomatous pododermatitis lesion?
*Unruptured cyst should be sterile = neutrophil + macrophages
How are interdigital follicular cysts treated?
*Treat aggressively early on to prevent scarring + reoccurence
*Immune-modulation - systemic and/or topical steroids - ciclosporin
*Topical antiseptics - chlorohexidine
*Protect paw from trauma - boots
