What is anti-school subculture?
Consists of students who dont agree with the values, norms and rules of the school.
What is differentiation?
The process of teachers categorizing pupils according to how they perceive their ability, attitude, and behaviour.
What is educational triage?
Categorizing pupils into those who will achieve, hopeless cases and those who need more support for a grade 5 or above.
What is habitus?
The learned ways of thinking, being and acting that are shared by a particular social class.
What are interactionists?
They are sociologists who are interested in how people attach labels to things or others and the effect of labelling. Normally face-to-face.
What is labelling?
The process of attaching a definition to an individual or group that is stereotypical.
What is marketisation?
The policy of introducing schools to be run as a business.
What are league tables?
Public records which shows which schools are performing well.
What are ‘Nike’ identities?
Based upon wearing branded sportswear that differentiate from W/C pupils from M/C pupils.
What is polarisation?
Division into two sharply contrasting groups.
What is pro-school subculture?
The group of students who accept and conform to the rues and values of the school.
What is self-exclusion?
The act of excluding oneself from an activity.
What are pupils subcultures?
A group of people who share similar behaviours and views on school.
What is self-fulfilling prophecy?
A prediction that comes true simply by virtue of it having been made.
What is self-refuting prophecy?
Where some pupils detach themselves from the label and prove the person wrong.
