What is collectivism?
Valuing being apart of a group more than succeeding as an individual.
What is cultural capital?
The knowledge, attitudes, values, tastes and abilities of the M/C.
What is economic capital?
A persons wealth, both cash and assets including, stocks, money in their home, etc.
What is educational capital?
Educational goods that are bought for and in the educational system. e.g. Private school.
What is cultural deprivation?
A theory that W/C and black children are inadequately socialised and lack the ‘right’ culture needed for educational success.
What is the elaborated code?
Its a speech code, typically used by M/C. It has wider vocab, complex sentences, longer phrases, etc.
What is external factors?
Outside factors.
What is internal factors?
Inside factors.
What is immediate gratification?
Seeking pleasure now rather than making sacrifices instead of getting the rewards in the future.
What is fatalism?
A belief that ‘what will be, will be’ and nothing you do can change.
What is present-time orientation?
Seeing the present as more important than the future, so not having any long term goals.
What is material deprivation?
Poverty: lack on basic necessities.
What is middle class?
A group in society that have non-manual jobs. E.g. doctors.
What is the restricted code?
Speech code used by the W/C. Its limited vocab, short sentences and use gestures.
What is subculture?
A group whose attitudes and values differ from mainstream culture.
