Class / Action
A
Anti-psychotic, Tranquilizer, Anti-nausea / Blocks dopamine (D2), muscarinic cholinergic, alpha adrenergic, and histamine (H1) receptors. Antipsychotic effects are thought to be a result of its selective blockade of postsynaptic dopamine receptors.

A
ONSET: 3-10min IV/IM
DURATION: 2-4hrs

Indications
A
- Aggressive or agitated behavior
- Excited delirium
- Severe nausea

Contraindications
A
- Depressed mental status
- Parkinson’s disease
- Prolonged QTI (>440ms in M & >450ms in F)

Precautions
A
- Elderly with dementia related psychosis
- Utilize caution if combined with other medications that may prolong QTI (ondansetron)

Dosages / Administration
A
Agitation/Chemical Sedation or Severe Nausea:
-Adult: 1.25-2.5mg IM or SIVP
-Peds: CONTACT MARY BRIDGE

- Extrapyramidal symptoms
- Parkinsonism
- Dystonia
- Akathisia
- Tardive Dyskinesia
- Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
- QTI Prolongation & Potential for Torsades
- HypOtension
