Monosaccharide
- When given orally, it is readily absorbed in the intestine
- After absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, glucose is readily distributed in the tissues and provides a prompt increase in circulating blood glucose

- Patients with AMS

- Unconsciousness

Precautions
A
Because changes in levels of consciousness can change rapidly in pts with hypoglycemia, it is important to ascertain the pt’s ability to swallow an oral preparation of glucose w/o airway compromise

Dosages / Administration
A
- ADULT: Squeeze Glucose from the tube on tongue depressor and insert between cheek and gum. Alternatively Let pt squeeze the solution into his/her own mouth to swallow.
- PEDS: Titrate to effect

Adverse Reactions
A
- Possible aspiration by pt w/p gag reflex
