Vacant Building(s) in a RowFirst Line

A

The first to arrive engine company stretches a 3 ½” hoseline to supply a TL, and stretches a handline for use on the exterior of the building.Initially operate from the exterior until the TL, or a heavy caliber stream can be placed into operation. The handline is then stretched into the most severe exposure.

Q

Vacant Building(s) in a RowSecond Line

A

Stretched to the opposite exposure or through an exposure to the rear yard.

17
Q

RowframeIf we are using all hands and the fire is not under control, it may be necessary to

A

special call an extra engine and ladder

18
Q

If a floor is fully involved in fire from the front to the rear a full first alarm assignment is required. It is also advisable to

A

call for an additional engine and ladder.

19
Q

If two or more floors are fully involved, or a top floor fire has extended into thecockloft,

A

the need for a second alarm must be considered.

20
Q

If two buildings are involved,

A

we have a 2nd alarm situation.

21
Q

if Fire extends beyond two Rowframe buildings.

A

Prompt consideration must be given to transmitting a 3rd alarm

22
Q

In balloon frame construction, what supports the floor joists or the upper floor?

A

The ledger board. rf-bs, appendix 1 figure 9

23
Q

In braced frame construction, what supports the upper floors studs and floor joists?

A

BRACED FRAMING STOPS VERTICAL EXTENSION OF FIRE BY USE OF A GIRT. WHEN A BUILDING IS BRACE FRAMED, THE UPPER FLOOR STUDS AND FLOOR JOISTS ARE SUPPORTED BY THIS GIRT. THE GIRT IS A HORIZONTAL 2X4 PLACED ON TOP OF THE STUDS ON EACH FLOOR. HOWEVER, OTHER FEATURES CONTRIBUTE TO THE SPREAD OF FIRE HORIZONTALLY.rf-bs, appdx 1 figure 10

24
Q

A quick determination as to whether a structure is balloon frame can be made by

A

removing a baseboard on an exterior wall and check for the presence of a sole plate.PD’s Ch 4 3.1Platform shoes have soles.Platform bldgs have sole plates.

25
Q

What construction feature acts effectively as a fire stop and limits vertical extension via the exterior walls in platform construction?

A

A top plate. PD’s 3.3
