Deck 104 Flashcards
What is the purpose of using the KO Curtain or Fire Window Blanket?
To cover a window when the wind is blowing fire back into the fire occupancy.Once the KO Curtain or Fire Window Blanket is in place, the negative effects of the wind will be diminished, allowing members to advance a hand line toward the fire area as directed by the IC. Tools 2 & 3, 2.1
Regarding fire conditions, what can one expect when the Wind Control Device is in place?
an immediate 50% decrease in temperatures and significant flame reduction when the KO Curtain/Blanket is deployed, but there will be an increase in the smoke condition produced by the fire. Tools 2 & 3, 2.1
The KO Curtain shall be deployed for the following conditions:
A Evolution 34, 1.2.1 A window in the fire apartment has failed and size-up indicates wind is blowing the fire into the apartment continuously or intermittently.1.2.2 Size-up indicates that deployment of the KO Curtain prior to window failure willprevent a wind driven fire from developing.Note: The KO Curtain will ONLY be deployed on orders of the Officer of thefirst arriving ladder company and/or the Incident Commander.EVO 33, 2.3 The fire window blanket may be used as pre-deployment option to cover a window prior to it failing in order to prevent a wind-driven fire.
When is the KO Curtain placed OOS?
If there is any doubt as to the serviceability of the KO Curtain, the OOD shall place the curtain out of service. Tools 2, 3.2
When is the Blanket replaced?
Upon completion of operations where a Fire Window Blanket has been deployed, the ICwill secure the Fire Window Blanket until the arrival of the Safety Battalion or theirdesignee. Tools 3, 4.1
When is the Blanket placed OOS?
If the inspection reveals that the aluminized foil is peeling and separating from the white cloth the blanket shall be placed out of service. Tools 3, 4.6
Who prepares the report for the replacement of either the Curtain or Blanket ?
The Ladder Company Officer of the confiscated KO Curtain/Blanket will prepare a brief letterhead report to Chief of Operations. The officer shall also include any additional information that may be important to thefuture use of this device and forward a report via chain of command with copy to theChief of the Fire Academy.
Where does the replacement KO Curtain come from?
6.3 Contact the administrative Division for a replacement KO Curtain. Tools 2 6.3
Where does the replacement Blanket come from?
When a replacement of a Fire Window Blanket is required the company officer shall contact Technical Services during normal business hours and request a replacement with an available spare. Tools 3 4.3
Regarding Standpipe pressurized alarm systems, when would sitesafety managers conduct a “tracing” examination of a standpipe on every floorto verify that no breach exists throughout the building.
Weekly. BISP Chapter 5 ref 1.10 ,5.1The law also requires daily, multifacetedchecks to ensure that a standpipe system is available and in readiness at all timesfor use by FD.
Regarding fire conditions, what can one expect when the Wind Control Device is in place? (MD’s)
Will cause an IMMEDIATE reduction in heat and intensity of the fire. POSSIBLE reduction of visibility in the fire area due to an increase in smokeproduction. Fire may PERIODICALLY vent around the sides and top of the deployed WCDwith the potential for auto-exposure to the floor(s) above. The deploymentwindow MUST be closed after deployment of the device. Advancing a hoseline into the fire apartment after a WCD is deployed,MAY increase steam and/or heat production. This is due to: WCD allowing members to move closer to the main body of fire. WCD preventing ANY ventilation of the fire area. Firefighters MUST have all PPE in place and use the full reach of the stream to maximize cooling of the area ahead of the advancing hose line.
When the alternate strategy of a WCD has been successfully implemented, which actions should be taken, at a fireproof MD?
Approval to enter the public hallway MUST be given by the IC, Operations SectionChief or Fire Sector Supervisor.Only the Ladder Officer and ONE member of the forcible entry team shall enter the public hallway to locate and gain control of the fire apartment door. The other member of the interior team will remain at the attack stairwell door on the hallway side of the door to ensure the stairwell door remains closed. The Engine officer shall be responsible for control and coordination on the stairwell side of the door.Once the Ladder Officer gains control of the fire apartment door, have the Engine advance the charged hoseline to the fire apartment door. The Ladder member who remained at the stairwell door shall also advance to thefire apartment door. The LCO shall evaluate and communicate to the IC and/or Fire Sector Supervisor of the conditions found. The IC and/or Fire Sector Supervisor shall determine if additional alternate strategies are required orwhether to enter the fire apartment.Once the decision has been made by the IC and/or Fire Sector Supervisor to enter the fire apartment, the Engine Company must enter the apartment first followed by the Ladder Company.FFP MD add3 5.1.e
