Chapter 8 Textbook notes Flashcards
Where are the organs of the digestive system located?
Within a tube called the gastrointestinal (GI) tract
What is the purpose of digestion?
To hydrolize-or break down using water- macromolecules to their subunit molecules
What processes are necessary to the digestive process?
- Ingestion
- Digestion
- Movement
- Absorption
- Elimination
Describe ingestion
Occurs when the mouth takes food in. Can be associated with our diet.
Describe mechanical Digestion
Occurs when large pieces of food are divided into smaller pieces. occurs primarily in the mouth by chewing and by wavelike contractions of the smooth muscles in the stomach called peristalsis
What are the two types of digestion?
Digestion can be mechanical or chemical
Describe chemical digestion
Digestive enzymes hydrolyze our food’s macromolecules into absorbable subunits. It begins in the mouth, continues in the stomach, and is completed in the small intestine
