Chapter 4 course packet Flashcards
What are the four basic classes of human tissues?
1) Epithelial tissue
2) Connective tissue
3) Muscle tissue
4) Nervous tissue
Epithelial tissue is
Lining tissue, epidermis, lining of blood vessels and lung alveoli, lining of ducts & GI tract (skin, GI tract)
Connective tissue is
Tendons (dense, regular) cartilage, bone, blood
Muscle tissue is
Skeletal muscle (biceps), smooth muscle (stomach), cardiac muscle
Nervous tissue is
Sensory neurons (to CNS), motor neurons (to effectors), neuroglia
Overview of the human organ system
1) Integumentary system-skin
2) Muscular system-muscles
3) Skeletal system-bones
4) Nervous system-nerves
5) Endocrine system-collection of glands/organs that make hormones
6) Circulatory system-blood
7) Lymphatic system
8) Respiratory system-breathing
Is the skin considered a organ?
Yes
What is the skins (body’s largest organ) functions
1) Barrier protection
2) Homeostatic functions
3) Sensory functions
4) Excretory functions
5) Vitamin D
Epidermis is
Mostly dead stratified squamous epithelial tissue, keratin and melanin
Dermis is
Where the blood and lymph vessels, nerve receptors, hair roots, sweat glands are
Hypodermis is
Mostly loose connective tissue-anchors the skin while allowing movement and adipose tissue (fat)-insulating
The course of stimuli
Stimuli > receptor> integrator > effector > response
