Ch 10.1 Flashcards
What is communication?
Communication is the process of exchanging information between a sender and a receiver, where the sender encodes and transmits a message, and the receiver decodes and understands it.
What is a strict chain of command in organizational communication?
formal communication lines in an organization, where information flows downward (from top to bottom), upward (from bottom to top), and horizontally (across departments).
What are the three forms of communication in a strict chain of command?
The three forms are:
Downward communication (from top to bottom)
Upward communication (from bottom to top)
Horizontal communication (across departments)
What are some deficiencies in the chain of command?
Deficiencies include:
Informal communication (important ideas often bypass formal channels)
Slowness (communication can be slow, especially between departments)
Filtering (messages can be watered down or stopped during transmission)
How does informal communication benefit organizations?
helps people accomplish tasks more effectively and can be a source of innovation by bypassing organizational boundaries.
What is filtering in organizational communication?
message is watered down or blocked during transmission, often due to time pressure, lack of attention, or motives to control information.
What is upward filtering and downward filtering?
Upward filtering happens when employees withhold information from management out of fear.
Downward filtering happens when managers withhold information from subordinates to maintain control.
