B6.3.2 Flashcards
How can pathogens be spread between plants
.Vectors such as insects
.Direct contact of sap from an infected plant with a healthy plant. Sap can be released by agricultural damage, or through animals feeding on the plants
.The wind. Fungal spores can be blown between plants. Infected seeds can be blown across large distances
How can pathogens be spread between animals
.Through cuts in skin
.Through digestive system
.Through respiratory system
.Through reproductive system
What is the incubation period
There is time delay between harmful microorganisms entering your body and you feeling unwell. This is called the incubation period. During this time, the pathogens reproduce rapidly as they grow and reproduce they cause cell damage; some pathogens also produce toxic waste products.
What can viruses not do by themselves
They can’t reproduce by themselves so they take over a host organism’s cells to make more viruses.
What is the process of the viruses replicating themselves.
Viruses attacks a cell -> inserts its genes -> tells the nucleus to copy its genes -> new viruses are made -> cell bursts, releasing the new viruses destroying your cell
What is the incidence of a disease
This is the rate at which new cases occur in a population over a period of time.
When monitoring non-communicable diseases what do scientists do
Studies often last for long periods and involve many people.
