B3.3.5 Flashcards
What triggers the thirst response
A reduction in water potential or blood plasma or an increase in salt
What does the thirst response do
Impulse sent to your brain telling you to take on more fluids. Kidney responds by reproducing less urine.
If you don’t take on more fluids what happens
You’d become dehydrated
What are the symptoms of dehydration
Dark coloured urine
Headaches and dizziness
Lack of energy
If dehydrated for too long person may suffer permanent damage to kidneys or liver
If the water potential is too high what happens
It responds by producing large volumes of non-concentrated urine. If water is consumer to rapidly, water moves by osmosis into cells causing them to burst as a result.
