B1.1.1 Flashcards
What are eukaryotic cells
Contain genetic material in a nucleus. They are complex and relatively large sizing between 10uM and 100uM. They are plant and animal cells
What are prokaryotic cells
Do not contain a nucleus there genetic material floats in the cytoplasm. They are smaller than eukaryotic cells and size from 1uM to 10uM. Bacterial cells are examples.
Animal and plant cells (mitochondria)
Site of respiration. They have enzymes enabling glucose and oxygen to react together. The reactions transfer energy to the organism.
Animal and plant cells (nucleus)
Controls the activities of the cell, it contains the organisms genetic material arranged as chromosomes. This determines the cells appearance and function. It also contains information on how to make new cells and organisms.
Animal and plant cells (cytoplasm)
A ‘jellylike’ substance. Chemical reactions happen here.
Animal and plant cells (cell membrane)
A selective barrier that controls which substances pass into and out of the cell. The membrane also contains receptor molecules.
Plants cells (chloroplasts)
Contain green chlorophyll. Chlorophyll transfers energy from the sun to the plant as light, which is used in photosynthesis . These make the plant green.
Plant cells (cell wall)
Is made up of cellulose which makes the cell rigid and supports the cell.
Plant cells (vacuole)
Full of watery sap, a solution of sugar and salts that keeps the cell rigid and upright.
