B1.3.1 Flashcards
What is the metabolic rate
The speed at which chemical reactions in your cells transfer energy from its stores in food.
What are carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are polymers. They are made from smaller carbohydrate molecules such as sugars. There are different types of sugars.
What are proteins
Proteins are polymers. They are formed from amino acids. There are about 20 different amino acids and the order in which the amino acids are joined determines the protein that is made.
What enzymes break down carbohydrates
Carbohydrase enzymes
What enzymes break down starch
Amylase enzymes
What enzymes break down protein
Protease enzymes
What are lipids
Lipids are fats and oils that you eat. They are a good store of energy and some animals use them for insulation and buoyancy. Lipids are made up of three fatty acids and glycerol.
What enzyme breaks down lipids
Lipase breaks down lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
What happens when food molecules are fully digested
They are absorbed into the blood stream
