B4.1.1 Flashcards
What is an ecosystem made up of
All the living and physical conditions in an area
What is a community
The organisms within the ecosystem
What is a habitat
The area which they live in
What is the population
The total number of organisms of each species
What are producers
Organisms that make their own food through photosynthesis. This includes all plants and algae.
What are consumers
Organisms that can’t make their own food. They have to eat others to gain energy.
What are decomposers
Gain energy by feeding on dead decaying matter
Where does energy originate from
The energy originates from the sun which is transferred by light to chlorophyll in cells of a producer.
What can the glucose produced in photosynthesis be used for
It can be converted into protein, fat and carbohydrates used for growth and repair.
What happens as an organism grows
It increases its biomass.
What’s biomass
The mass of living material that is present.
What do food chains show
They show what organisms eat
What do the arrows show
Arrows show the flow of biomass and therefore energy transfer.
What is each step in a food chain
It’s a trophic level.
What are food webs
A series of interlinked food chains.
