B6.2.4 Flashcards
What is a problem with selective breeding
It’s a very slow process.
What does genetic engineering allow us to do
To alter an organism’s genome to produce an organism with desired characteristics.
What are the benefits of genetic engineering
Increases crop yield
Produces toxins that kill insects
Produces medical drugs such as insulin
How are GMOs produced
Scientists take genes from another organism that codes for this characteristic
When is the foreign gene put in an organism
Puts foreign genes into an organism at an early stage of the organisms development. As the organism develops, it displays the characteristics coded for by the foreign gene.
What are the risks of eating GMOs
May eventually lead to health problems
May cross pollinate with wild plants introducing the new gene into wild plants (unethical)
Some people don’t like the idea of eating GMOs
