B3.2.1 Flashcards
What are hormones
Chemical messengers
Where are hormones made and secreted into
Hormones are made in the endocrine glands and are secreted into the blood around the body
What do hormones do (cells and organs wise)
They cause a response in specific cells that are found in target organs
How does the blood transport hormones
It transports hormones in the plasma around the body
What do hormones do (regulate)
They regulate the functions of many cells and organs
What are the characteristics of hormone responses
They are fairly slow and long lasting, however some can act more quickly e.g adrenaline
What is keeping conditions in your body constant
It’s called homeostasis.
What do hormones control
They control body processes that need constant adjustment such as temperature.
Whole process of hormones working
Hormones diffuse out of the blood and bind to specific receptors for that hormone, found on the membranes or cytoplasm of cells in target organs. Known as target cells. Once bound they stimulate a response.
What is a difference between hormones and nerves
Hormones travel all around the blood stream whereas nerve impulses travel to specific parts of the body.
What is the endocrine system
Name given to all endocrine glands and the hormones that they produce
What does the endocrine system do with the nervous system
It controls and coordinates body processes with the nervous system. Both systems regulate internal and external environments.
