B5.2.4 Flashcards
What is classification
The process of sorting organisms in groups. The organisms within each group share similar characteristics.
What can researchers do with classification systems
Share their research worldwide
What is the order of classification
Kingdom, Phylla, Class, Order, Family, Genus. Species
What are artificial classification systems
They group organisms together using observable characteristics. They don’t take evolutionary relationships in account.
What are natural classification systems
The evolutionary links between organisms used to group organisms to common ancestors
What is phylogeny
The study of evolutionary links
How are phylogenic links established
They are established by studying similarity in DNA between species. More similar DNA - more closely related species.
