B2.2.3 Flashcards
1
Q
What is selective breeding
A
When plants and animals are bred for a specific characteristic
2
Q
How is selective breeding done in plants
A
Cross plants with high resistance to disease with high-yielding plants to produce high-yielding disease resistant plants.
3
Q
What are the steps of selective breeding
A
- Decide on which characteristics of species are desirable
- Select parent with high levels of characteristic
- Bread from these individuals
- Select offspring and breed again
- Repeat for many generations
4
Q
What are the disadvantages of selective breeding 1
A
Reduces the number of alleles of a species which reduces variation. This means that, if a new disease arises, there may not be an organism that has the allele for resistance to the disease. The species may become extinct.
5
Q
What are the disadvantages of selective breeding 2
A
Increases the chance of inheriting a genetic disease
