B1.1.2 Flashcards
What are bacteria?
Bacteria are the smallest living organisms. They are unicellular organisms. All cells can carry out the seven life processes.
Cell wall
Made up of peptidoglycan which holds the cell together and protects it
Cell membrane
A barrier controlling substances entering and leaving the cell
Genetic material
Floats freely in the cytoplasm as one long strand of DNA called bacterial chromosome it’s normally circular.
Plasmid
A circular piece of DNA used to store extra genes. These genes are for times of stress for example its where antibiotic resistance is found.
Slime capsule
Layer outside the wall protecting bacteria from drying out and from poisonous substances. it also helps bacteria to stick to smooth surfaces
Pilli
Tiny hair like structures allowing the cells to attach to structures. They are also used to transfer genetic material.
Flagella
Allows the bacteria to move through liquids.
