B1.1.3 Flashcards
Equation of magnification
Total magnification = eyepiece lens x objective lens
Magnification other equation
Magnification = image size/ actual size
What must you do in order to see cellular structures?
You must stain them.
Methylene blue - makes it easier to see the nucleus of the animal cell.
Iodine - makes it easier to see plant cell nuclei
Crystal violet - makes it easier to see bacterial cell walls
Steps for using a microscope
1) move stage to lowest position
2) Select objective lens with lowest magnification
3) Place the slide on the stage
4) Raise the stage to the highest point without making it touch the lens
5) Lower the stage using the coarse focus until you see your object
6) Turn the fine focus knob slowly until it comes into clear focus
7) To see the cells in greater detail, switch to a higher magnification
