B4.1.8 Flashcards
What are decomposers
Microorganisms. These bacteria and microscopic fungi break down, or decay dead organic matter.
What can decomposers also break down
They can also break down animal waste such as faeces and urine
What do decomposers release
Nutrients which can be cycled
What are dertritivores
Small animals that speed up decomposition by shredding organic matter into small pieces.
How do bacteria and fungi break down substances
Bacteria and fungi break down substances into organic matter. Soluble nutrients are reabsorbed into their bodies and are used for growth and an energy store.
How do warm temperatures affect the rate of decomposition
At high temperatures enzymes are denatured and at low temperatures the rate of decomposition is slow as the enzyme controlled reactions are reduced.
How do moist environments affect the rate of decomposition
If no enough water is available reactions within the microorganisms will slow down or be prevented reducing stopping or slowing down of rate of reaction.
How do aerobic conditions affect rate of decomposition
oxygen is needed for organisms to respire. Anaerobic conditions prevent most forms of decomposition and microorganisms can’t survive.
