B1.3.2 Flashcards
Where does energy come from
It comes from the chemical stores in the food you eat.
How is the energy transferred
The energy is transferred from the food when glucose reacts with oxygen in a series of chemical reactions called aerobic respiration.
How is the oxygen carried
The oxygen is carried in the blood stream to the cells that need them for respiration
Respiration word and chemical equation
glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —-> 6CO2 + 6H2O
What does respiration do
Respiration transfers energy from chemical stores in glucose to another chemical store for all processes in the cell.
What is the energy store called
The energy store is called ATP
What is ATP used for
To synthesise larger molecules from smaller ones to make new cell materials.
For movement
To stay warm
Where does respiration take place in the cell
Respiration takes place inside the mitochondria of a cell. Each chemical reaction that takes place during respiration is controlled by a specific enzyme.
What does the number of mitochondria in a cell show
The number of mitochondria in a cell tells you how active a cell in. Muscle cells have lots of mitochondria as they need to transfer lots of energy.
Is respiration endothermic or exothermic
It’s exothermic
