Alcohol Abuse 5 Flashcards
Biopsychosocial model of alcohol
alcohol abuse has many causes and that some people can learn to overcome the causes of their drinking problems and revert to alcohol use (controlled drinking)
What is the key
can chronic alcoholics be taught to control their drinking or does one drink mean total relapse
With past behaviour and self identity how much variance is explained
extra variables explain 73% of the variance
This is a … model
This is a linear model, hence in reality, the past is the past and is therefore immutable to change (implications for intervention)
Define past behaviour
history of alcohol consumption
Note
this is a conservative linear explanation of causation, some researchers now argue that current behaviour influences past behaviour (self-identity)
Define self-identity
the degree to which the person identifies with the role of a consumer of alcohol
From a social psychological point of view…
From a social psychological point of view, self identity plays an important role in decisions
A person will drink because
because they wish to play a consistent role; because others expect them to drink in a significant number of situations and this expectation forces them to comply
Implications of enhanced model
this concept needs to be focused on to prevent relapse - that is, people with alcohol problems will wish to change their role, including the expectations of influential others
Relapse and implications for release prevention (4)
1) Identification of high risk situations; 2) Developing coping strategies for these settings; 3) Role playing strategies to ensure they are effective; 4) Self-identity signifies: family, friends, colleagues will expect the person to drink heavily every-time they socialise
Bivano & Jackson (2015) enhanced TPB
Consistent with other TPB studies on binge drinking and other health related behaviours, there is a positive relationship between PBC and intentions and PBC and drinking behaviour
Bivano & Jackson (2015) correlation between Attitudes and behavioural intentions

Bivano & Jackson (2015) correlation between subjective norms and behavioural intentions
