Alpha and Gamma alcoholics with history of heavy drinking
Social learning model strength/weaknesses
highest percentage of alcoholics; heavy (to alcoholic) parents; totally abstinent parents in heavy drinking societies
Social learning model treatment
controlled drinking
Social learning model treatment success
controversial treatment (not abstinence), forced to treat all alcoholics, but should only be applied to Alpha and Gamma alcoholics
Ultimate questions (4)
1) From a bio-psychosocial perspective, alcohol abuse has the greatest negative impact on society [comparing it with illegal drugs, cigarette smoking, and abuse of prescription [legal] drugs – how does society intervene?; 2) Medical model that indicates alcohol is a disease and alcoholics have no control over their behaviour appears to interfere with recovery [if relapse is included] – does this maintain the problem; 3) In terms of perceived behaviour control binge drinking is a different problem than traditional alcohol abuse - What are the implications for prevention?; 4) Another example of same behaviour [ADHD, depression, excessive drinking] having different causes and therefore possible different treatment options. Should this be applied to all psychotherapies???
