Alcohol Abuse 2 Flashcards
Alcohol related domestic violence
Alcohol is estimated to be involved in up to half of partner violence in Australia and 73% of partner physical assaults reported to police; these figures are higher in rural-remote areas
Note, if someone…
if someone believes they have no control over their drinking, what perception are they likely to have about their drunken violence
Define alcoholism
arose from the traditional medical-disease model and assumes that once an alcoholic has the disease they will always have it.
What is the treatment for alcoholism
Only recommended treatment, total abstinence.
Paradox
someone may have been abstinence for 20 years but is considered an alcoholic (compared to a social drinker)
Why is this a problem
This conceptualisation is a major problem because the definition is inconsistent with the behaviour
What has the DSM done
That is, DSM system shifted from labels/categories to frequency measures of problem behaviour)
What are the preferred terms and what has this allowed
Alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence are the preferred terms and has allowed a shift to a bio-psychosocial model
Dimensions of alcohol abuse
non-social pathological use (psychological); impairment of psychosocial functioning (social); prolonged duration of use (biological)
Dimensions of alcohol dependence
non-social pathological use (psychological); impairment of psychosocial functioning (social); prolonged duration of use (biological); evidence of tolerance and withdrawal symptoms (biological)
Difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence
same except alcohol dependence also has evidence of tolerance/withdrawal
Study 1 Original addiction studies
Rats put in stark cage with food; given access to two bottles (one with water and the other water with heroin)
Results of study 1 Original addiction studies
100% addiction; 95% overdose
Conclusion of study 1 Original addiction studies
ingest heroin long enough - become addicted
Accordingly the disease model makes either of two claims
Claim A: all or most people who use heroin or cocaine beyond a certain minimum amount become addicted; Claim B: No matter what proportion of the users of heroin and cocaine become addicted, their addiction is caused solely by exposure to the drug
