What is an omnivore?
Person who consumes both animal and plant products
What is a semi-vegetarian?
Person who restricts one or more type of animal meat
What is a pescaterian?
Person who restricts most or all animal products except fish
What is a plan-based diet?
Diet mostly or entirely based on plant-derived foods. (No clear definition)
What is a vegetarian?
Person who avoids some or all animal-related food and ingredients
What is a lacto-ovo vegetarian?
Person who avoids animal flesh, but consume milk products and eggs
What is a lacto-vegetarian?
Person who avoids animal flesh and eggs, but consume milk products
What is a vegan?
Person who excludes all animal products, including eggs and milk. Maybe also animal-involved products, like honey
What are health benefits of vegetarian diets?
- High in fibre and phytochemicals, low in sat fats
- Likely to have lower BMIs, total cholesterol and LDL
- Lower risk of heart disease, cancer, and CVD mortality
What are health risks of vegetarian diets?
- Lower in vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, iron, and zinc
- Vitamin B12 is only found in animal products (and nutritional yeast)
- Supplementation is recommended of you are lacking in any of the above
