1.6 Flashcards
Why do we eat?
To get nutrients, which contribute to body structure, body function, and energy.
Enjoyment - Social, fun, tastes good
Psychological reasons - Nostalgia, depressed, bored
How much energy do the 3 energy providing nutrients give?
Carbs, proteins = 4 kcal/g
Lipids = 9 kcal/g
Alcohol provides how much energy?
7 kcal/g
How do nutrients contribute to our anatomy?
Cell membranes are made up of lipids.
Proteins and carbohydrates can be found embedded within these membranes.
The inner goo, or cytoplasm, of a cell is made up of water and certain minerals like potassium and chloride are found within it
The body is 60–70% water by weight
Protein also adds structure to our muscles, bones and teeth.
Minerals harden our bones and teeth, making them stronger.
Lipids provide body structure and cushioning when they are stored in adipose tissue.
What is homeostasis? How is this achieved?
Homeostasis is a state of
dynamic equilibrium that allows our bodies to function optimally.
All nutrients contribute to physiology by being involved in various reactions and processes aimed at maintaining homeostasis
What is basal metabolism?
The requirement of energy for the body in order to perform is various functions and keep us alive.
What is a calorie?
The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius
What is the relations between kcal, cal, and Cal?
1 kcal = 1 Cal = 1000 cal
