4.3 Delivering Absorbed Nutrients Flashcards
After nutrients enter the blood capillaries at the villi, where are they sent next?
Nutrients enter veins that lead to the liver
What happens to the nutrients that end up at the liver?
The liver stores, uses, detoxifies, or sends the nutrients to the rest of the system via the inferior vena cava (that leads to the heart)
What happens once the nutrients are sent to the heart?
They can be transported to where it is needed
What nutrients can enter the villi?
All nutrients except large lipids and fat-soluble vitamins
Where to large lipids and fat-soluble vitamins go?
They enter into lymphatic vessels (lacteal) and the lymphatic system
What does the lymphatic system do?
Series of vessels that clear the tissues of things
Drainage system that allows us to absorb large fatty substances from the small intestine and send them to the rest of the body.
What organs help to remove toxins from our bodies?
Liver, kidneys, and lungs
