5.4 Water Balance Flashcards
What are the 3 sources of water for our body?
Liquids, foods, and metabolism
Why do we have to always take in water?
Our bodies don’t store water
What are 2 ways the body preserves water levels?
Thirst response and Kidneys (excrete less water when blood pressure is low)
How does the kidney work?
- Blood arrives into kidney via renal artery
- Kidneys decide what to excrete, including water
- What is not excreted returns to the body via renal veins
What causes dehydration?
Insufficient consumption or excessive loss
What are symptoms of dehydration?
Thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, irritability, dark urine
What can chronic dehydration lead to?
kidney damage, seizures, hypovolemic shock
What is water intoxication?
Water poisoning
What happens in water intoxication?
When water levels decrease the concentration of dissolved particles in the blood (ex hyponatremia)
What are symptoms of water intoxication?
Headache, confusion, personality changes, irritability, drowsiness

How can dehydration cause kidney disease? What can it lead to?
Not enough water to help secrete waste products.
Increase risk of UTIs, kidney stones, and chronic kidney disease/death
How can dehydration cause seizures?
Low electrolyte levels, compromising the body’s electrical activity.
How can dehydration cause hypovolemic shock? What are some symptoms?
Body loses a lot of blood or extracellular fluid, leading to low blood pressure.
Increased heart rate, low blood pressure, blue skin, cool and clammy skin, and mental status change
