11.3 Obesity Flashcards
What are adipocytes?
Fat cells found within our adipose tissue
What happens when adipocytes reach their maximum size?
They’ll divide
What is a significant function of adipocytes?
They secret messengers called adipokines (ex leptin) that communicate with other body tissues
What is the function of adipokines in our body?
Below a certain fat level, they promote health
Above a certain fat level, they promote low-grade inflammation and disease
What is the purpose of Leptin, an adipokine?
Acts on the brain’s hypothalamus to promote fullness
How does leptin regulate our weight?
As our fat cells get larger, more leptin is released, decreasing appetite and promoting an energy deficit
How can out bodies ignore leptin?
- Certain genes can compromise production, resulting in obesity
- Those with obesity build a leptin resistance
When and why did the Canadian Medical Association declare obesity as a disease?
2015
It has a long duration, requires systematic approach to management, and occurs due to both genetic and lifestyle factors
What two diseases can obesity lead to?
Sick fat disease
Fat mass disease
What is sick fat disease? Is it more physiological or anatomical?
Adipokine secretion shifts to promote low-grade inflammation, exacerbating type 2 diabetes, CVD, cancers, and fatty liver
physiological
What is fat mass disease? Is it more physiological or anatomical?
Added weight promotes biomechanical and structural challenges including osteoarthritis, joint pain, sleep apnea, and tissue friction
anatomical
