What are some risk factors for EDs?
Genetics Female Socio-cultural factors (Pressure to be thing) Personality (Perfectionism) History of sexual/physical abuse
What disorders have being eating as a symptom?
Bulimia, binge eating disorder, and sometimes in anorexia
What is binge eating?
Loss of control eating
How does a binging episode play out?
Occurs in a specific amount of time (ex 2 hours)
Occurs in a absence of hunger, at a fast rate, while alone, and feeling guilt and shame
What is Bulimia Nervosa?
An ED that involves binge eating then compensation (vomiting, laxatives, exercise)
What are some risk factors of Bulimia Nervosa?
Preoccupation with food
Body weight perceptions are distorted
Depression
Frequent dieting
What can Bulimia Nervosa cause besides damaging mental effects?
Vomiting can damage teeth, cause electrolyte imbalance
What is Binge eating disorder?
Binge eating without compensation
What are some risk factors of Binge eating disorder?
Frequent dieting
Inability to interpret hunger/satiety signals
What can Binge eating disorder cause besides damaging mental effects?
Promotes obesity, which increases risk of depression, which increases risk of binge eating
What is the most common eating disorder?
Binge eating disorder
What is Anorexia Nervosa?
Significant restriction in energy intake leading to an unhealthily low body weight.
Can also be extreme exercise, vomit, and laxatives.
What are some risk factors of Anorexia Nervosa?
Intense fear of weight gain
Disturbed by their weight/shape
Struggle with self-worth and acceptance
Experience amenorrhea
What is the eating disorder with the highest mortality rate? Why?
Anorexia Nervosa
Higher risk of suicide and less nutrients
What is amenorrhea?
The cessation of the period
What is night eating syndrome?
Abnormal increase in food intake at night (>25% calories consumed after dinner)
Lack of morning hunger
Insomnia
Increase obesity risk

Night eating syndrome
Orthorexia Nervosa?
What is Orthorexia Nervosa?
An obsession with eating healthy that has negative psychological implications.
Obsession and negative mental health implications of these restrictions that can causer a disordered eating pattern.
Also increases risk for micro nutrient deficiencies
What are some risk factors of Orthorexia Nervosa?
Promoted by societal pressure toward ‘clean eating’
What are some signs of Orthorexia Nervosa?
Compulsive nutrition label checking
Cutting out foods, nutrients, etc
Limiting food intake to few foods
How can EDs be treated?
Sometimes on their own
Typically begins with professional diagnosis and then psychological treatments. Sometimes medication can be prescribed and cognitive behavioural therapy can be performed.
