8/15/12 Flashcards
Which step in the TCA cycle produces a GTP?
succinyl-CoA –> succinate via succinate thiokinase
What reaction in the mitochondria requires the GTP produced by the TCA cycle?
OAA –> PEP via PEPCK
HIV pt w/ cough, low-grade fevers, and hepatosplenomegaly. Spherules seen w/in MΦs.
Histoplasma capsulatum
Pt w/ A fib experiences dizziness, confusion, nausea, blurry vision, and fatigue. She is also hyperkalemic. Dx?
Digitalis toxicity
What is the mechanism of action of zidovudine?
nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor - analog of thymidine w/o the 3’ OH group - the chain cannot form next phosphodiester bond and terminates.
What is unusual about the respiratory drive of COPD pts? What is the main implication of this ofr treaatment in the hospital?
It depends more on pO2 than pCO2; therefore you should not give O2 to COPD pts b/c it may cause respiratory depression –>–> cerebral hypoperfusion.
What statistical test(s) compare(s) the mean in 2 populations?
t-test or z-test
What statistical test(s) compare(s) the mean between 3 or more populations?
ANOVA
What statistical test(s) compare(s) the proportions of 2 groups?
chi-square
Renal failure + anion gap metabolic acidosis + oxalate crystals in the urine =
ethylene glycol poisoning
What enzyme catalyzes the conversion of pregnenolone to 17-hydroxypregnenolone?
17α-hydroxylase
What enzyme catalyzes the conversion of progesterone to 11-deoxycorticosterone?
21-hydroxylase
What enzyme catalyzes the conversion of 11-deoxycorticosterone to corticosterone?
11β-hydroxylase
What is phenylephrine and what is its effect on the kidney?
selective alpha agonist. decreases renal blood flow.
What kind of a drug is imipramine?
TCA
