59. Pain. Somatic and neuropathic pain Flashcards
1
Q
Three categories included in the diagnostic range of orofacial pain
A
- Medical conditions => cause, refer pain to the region, or masquerade as orofacial pain
- Intraoral pain conditions
- Musculoskeletal pain conditions => neck and jaw
2
Q
Temporomandibular disorders
A
- Extracranial musculoskeletal conditions involving the jaw=>
- Temporomandibular joint (articular) disorders
- Masticatory muscle (non-articular) disorders
3
Q
Neuropathic pain
A
Pain caused by a disease or lesion of somatosensory nervous system
4
Q
Neuropathic pain disorders classification
A
- Paroxysmal (episodic) painful conditions
- Continuous painful conditions
5
Q
Examples of paroxysmal neuropathic pain conditions
A
- Trigeminal neuralgia.
- Glossopharyngeal neuralgia.
- Nervous intermedius neuralgia
6
Q
Paroxysmal neuropathic pain characteristics
A
- Brief, electric shock-like pain=>
- lasts seconds to minutes with pain-free intervals
7
Q
Divisions of the trigeminal nerve most commonly affected by paroxysmal neuropathic pain
A
- Second and third divisions of the trigeminal nerve are most commonly affected
- The first division=> 1–2% of patients
8
Q
Examples of continuous neuropathic pain disorders
A
- Acute herpes zoster
- Chronic postherpetic neuralgia
- Diabetic neuropathy
9
Q
Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS)
A
- Continuous neuropathic pain condition=>
- Persistent pain without major visible signs
10
Q
Idiopathic persistent facial pain
A
- Partial or complete deafferentation
- Continuous neuropathic pain condition without an obvious cause
deafferentation-the interruption or destruction of the afferent connections of nerve cells
11
Q
Typical odontalgia
A
- Idiopathic persistent facial pain
- Phantom tooth pain
- Continuous but variable dull ache=>
- sometimes described as burning pain
- Follows dental treatment
12
Q
Somatic pain
A
- Pain originating from the skin, muscles, and soft tissues=>
- Well-localized=>
- Sharp, aching, or throbbing
13
Q
Somatic pain classification
A
- Superficial somatic pain=>skin or mucous membranes
- Deep somatic pain=> muscles, bones, joints, or connective tissues
