3.3 – RAID 5 Flashcards
RAID 5
–Uses disk striping to combine drives into one larger & faster logical drive & distributes parity across all disks in the array
good speed
lose a drive OK,
good redundancy,
lose a drive: slow
—Great for WORKSTATION or SERVER
RAID 5
Parity Data
is a smaller representative value that can be used to recreate data if data is lost
–Writes parity onto 1 disk while writing every cycle
–Data – Data – Parity
–Parity – Data – Data
–Data – Parity – Data
RAID 5
Advantages
-Data protection
–If 1 disk fails, parity will be used to recreate data
–Larger storage that a single drive
RAID 5
Disadvantages
–3 disks required but more disks increase capacity NOT protection / performance
–Parity is SLOW
—Working while a disk has failed = slow
—Rebuilding the array is slow when replacing a degraded disk
