DHCP
Server on IP that keeps track of IP address
Router in home is probably your DHCP server
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
Assign various configurations to the host of a network
Give IP address, subnet mask, gateway address, & DNS address
Common Configurations
From where to where it allocates an address
Class C – can setup DHCP to only give 50 IPs or 100 IPs
Scope
the range of addresses the server can assign
Exclusion Range
Is the range of addresses the server CANNOT assign
Can add a Manual Exclusion to the range that has already been assigned
Reservations
bind a MAC address to a specific IP address
Assign a STATIC IP
*AKA = Static Assignment
EX: have a printer & always want printer to get that MAC address
Allows DHCP to consistently assign the same IP address to a device without having to manually configure a static IP address
Lease Time
how long an IP address is “owned” by a host before it can be assigned to another host
Server only gives computer IP address for a certain amount of days: 7, 10, 15
Computer checks to see if it can still use address
Available Leases
Identify how many addresses are still available from the scope
