2.3 Wireless Network Considerations / Access Point Configurations Flashcards
SSID
Service Set Identifiers
a. Name of WLAN
b. Always change the default SSID
c. Set to an easy-to-identify unique name
d. SSIDs are CASE SENSITIVE
IP Address
a. Assign a static IP address for administration
b. Static = easier to get to / find
c. **NEVER **obtain an IP address automatically
Password
a. Change the default administrator username / password
Wireless Channel
a. 2.4 GHz networks
Only use channels 1, 6, 11
b. 5 GHz networks
Should avoid busy channels
Not as big of a concern
Signal Degradation - Distance
o All wireless signals will degrade the FURTHER away you are from the access point
o 2.4 GHz longer than 5 GHz
Signal Degradation - Walls & Other Barriers
o Barriers will REDUCE the transmission distance of any wireless signal
o metals =reflect wireless signals limiting transmission distance
o Thicker reinforced walls = degrade signals more than thinner walls
Signal Degradation - Interference
o Other wireless networks & devices can cause interference
o Microwaves, ovens, HVAC, & other high voltage appliances can also cause interference
