- Already assigned to machine
* Basically represents you - Used for host to communicate with itself
- Your OWN IP address

127.0.0.0 – 127.255.255.255

Why use a loopback?
A
- Everything that uses an IP address ALREADY has a loopback address [in the TCP stack]
- Using 127 address
- installed software wants to talk with internal software
- IF CHANGE IP address on NIC card then software has to be reconfigured
