Antitussive Non-Opioid Drugs
- dextromethorphan
- benzonatate
Expected Pharmacologic Action
suppress cough through its action on the CNS
-not an opioid, it is derived from opioids
Complications
- has few adverse effects
- some mild nausea, dizziness, and sedation can occur
Contraindications
pregnancy risk category C
Interactions
-can cause high fever when used within 2 weeks of MAOI anti-depressants
Medication Administration
- may contain alcohol and/ or sucrose
- available forms include capsules, lozenges (>2 years old), liquids, and syrups
Nursing Interventions
check temperature if used with MAOI anti-depressants
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
depending on therapeutic intent, effectiveness is evidenced by absence or decreased episodes of coughing
Therapeutic Use
- cough suppression
- can reduce pain when combined with an opioid
