Week 10: Chp 40: Pancreas Flashcards
1
Q
Where is the Pancreas Located?
A
upper left quadrant of the abdominal cavity
2
Q
Exocrine Functions of the Pancreas
A
involves the secretion of pancreatic juices into the small intestine that aid in digestion
3
Q
Endocrine Function of the Pancreas
A
blood glucose control by the islet cells of the pancreas
4
Q
What are the hormones released by the Pancreas?
A
- Insulin; released from the beta cells of the pancreas
- Glucagon; released from the alpha cells of the pancreas
5
Q
What is the Pancreas Responsible For?
A
producing the hormones insulin and glucagon which controls whether or not a patient will be hyper/hypoglycemic
6
Q
What measures the amount of enzymes circulating your bloodstream?
A
Amylase and Lipase
7
Q
Laboratory Values
A
- Amylase
- Lipase
8
Q
Glucose Homeostasis
A
- If blood glucose levels are high, more insulin is secreted by the pancreas; blood glucose is then driven into the cells and metabolized and as a result glucose levels in the blood fall
- If blood glucose levels fall too low, insulin release is suppressed, glucose remains in the bloodstream instead of being driven into the cells; in addition, the hormone glucagon is released from the pancreatic alpha cells; glucagon stimulates the production and release of glucose from glycogen stores in the liver leading to increased blood glucose levels
