BP: Sympatholytics: Beta Adrenergic Blockers Flashcards
1
Q
Common meds
A
- beta 1 (cardio selective): metoprolol
- beta1 and beta2 (non-selective): propranolol
- alpha and beta blockers: carvedilol
2
Q
Action
A
- Beta1 (cardioselective) and beta2 (non-selective): decrease HR, decreased myocardial contraction (decrease CO), decrease rate of AV conduction
- alpha and beta blockers: alpha adds vasodilation
3
Q
Use
A
Primary HTN, angina, HF, MI, tachydysrhythmias
4
Q
Complications
A
- Beta 1 blockade: bradycardia, decreased CO, AV block, orthostatic hypotension, rebound myocardium excitation
- beta 2 blockade: bronchoconstriction, glycogenolysis (breakdown of glycogen) is inhibited
5
Q
Nursing considerations
A
- Beta1 blockade: monitor VS, hold HR <50, use with caution for HF, monitor for signs of worsening HF, baseline ECG, myocardium becomes sensitized to catecholamines with long term use, do not stop abruptly, d/c over 1-2 weeks
- beta2: avoid in asthmatics, diabetic mellitus patients rely on the breakdown of glycogen into glucose to manage low blood sugars, monitor blood glucose levels
